Christian Andersson is a Swedish artist known for his surrealist installations and objects that explore the limits of science and fiction. The edition for LOODD consists in an impossible set of keys. They are professionally made, put their shape seems too long for any existing door. The artist entitled them ‘Cellar door’ referring to the possible entrance they are meant to be made for. But he has chosen the title basically because it is a nice sounding word. It is even said to be Edgar Allan Poe’s favourite phrase.
Because that exactly is what remains as an unanswered question : which treasure is hidden where, behind which bars, in good or bad company.
That way Andersson’s objects function as Duchamp’s ready-made : first their directness surprises, but suddenly we’re able to discover amusing side-effects and interpretations.
